- DNS
- Domain Name Server - This service translates IP addresses (10.0.7.15) and their domain record names (mailux.almasd.net). This service translates both ways.

- IP
- Internet Protocol, the 'language' computers use to communicate over ethernet/internet.
- IP number
- a unique number assigned to every device in a subnet. Think of it as a telephone number for devices like your computer.
- Private IP
- a set of numbers which are not routeable, (i.e. unable to be used across routers) for example, alma schools use 10.0.0.x privately (inside our network), while publicly it uses a range of numbers assigned by DIS (66.204.50.1-66.204.50.255)
- Public IP
- a set of globally unique numbers by which all internet connected devices communicate

- NDPS
- Novell Distributed Printing Services - This service keeps track of all print jobs as well as knowing which printer driver goes with what printer. It also contains the resource manager, which distributes pre-defined sets of printers to students & staff.

- Router
- a device which literally routes IP packets from one network to another, such as a wireless router at home which routes traffic between your private network at home (usually 192.168.1.x) and your provider's public IP number assigned to you dsl or cable modem
