DNS
Domain Name Server - This service translates IP addresses (10.0.7.15) and their domain record names (mailux.almasd.net). This service translates both ways.

IP 
Internet Protocol, the 'language' computers use to communicate over ethernet/internet.
IP number
a unique number assigned to every device in a subnet. Think of it as a telephone number for devices like your computer.
Private IP
a set of numbers which are not routeable, (i.e. unable to be used across routers) for example, alma schools use 10.0.0.x privately (inside our network), while publicly it uses a range of numbers assigned by DIS (66.204.50.1-66.204.50.255)
Public IP
a set of globally unique numbers by which all internet connected devices communicate
